From the mid 70’s through the 80’s St Patrick's Day in Dublin was very special to my eyes. While often I shot the parade as a staffer for the Irish Press Group I much preferred to have the day off and mooch around the fringes looking for the quirky stuff. If I was shooting for the paper the main focus was the bling of the floats, politicians and performers but for me on my days off the fascinating thing was the audience - the crowds of ordinary decent people, families, kids, youths, American and Celtic nation visitors on a very special day out, enjoying a celebration of Irishness. Dublin then was greyer than today but the parade was an exceptional blast of colour in the city and for that reason I shot as much as possible on colour transparency film.
