In 1979 I was invited by John O'Shea, the founder of GOAL to accompany him to Sudan to look at their work. Southern Sudan had been devastated by yet another heavy flooding which had washed away traditional mud houses and ruined the fragile water and sanitation system, exposing the population to hunger and cholera. The ngo GOAL medical and logistical team on the ground were working with locals to treat children mainly affected by hunger and dysentry. These are my images from that visit.
